Anxiety

“Anxiety is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind. If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.”

It sounded like a lot of fun.

She wanted to go.

She didn’t.

She didn’t know if dogs would be in the house. She could not risk it.

Kireem’s* boss was retiring.

His boss told him he would be the best candidate and encouraged him to apply for his position.

Kireem was honored and humbled. It was an opportunity of a lifetime. With his boss’s recommendation, the job was his. He had worked so hard and really wanted the job.

But he did not apply.

Julia’s* college friends were planning a reunion.

They were going to hike up Mt. Washington and camp out for a few days.

Julia really missed her friends and would have loved to see them.

Rather than meet up with her friends, she stayed home.

Anxiety comes in so many shades, shapes, and sizes.

Small amounts are normal and should be embraced. A “thin stream of fear trickling through the mind” is a natural warning from your brain to pay attention.

Unfortunately, chronic, acute, and specific anxiety will “cut a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.”

It is exhausting, depressing, and debilitating – from sweaty palms, a nervous stomach, panic attacks to complete isolation.

There is a good reason why you are anxious.

Fortunately, all shades, shapes, and sizes of anxiety can be addressed in therapy.

Together, we can figure out why your fear paralyzes you through trust and dialogue once we understand the cause and the feelings attached.

We will determine if your fear is based on the here and now. We will likely find that it is not – that it does not serve a legitimate purpose today. However, more importantly, we are likely to find that the origins of your fear are very real and valid. In therapy, we will separate the misplaced fear from the real feelings.

Your anxiety will become dismantled as your feelings are understood in their origin.
