Parenting and Adoption

1913886883The toughest job you will ever have and (mostly) love…

That’s parenting.

Whatever form your family takes – whether it’s traditional or blended – whether with same-sex parents or adopted children – there are challenges you think may break you.

And just when you believe you’ve finally figured it out, another issue emerges!

“I had no idea it would be so hard.”

“I swear my kid has a split personality: her teachers love her, but she’s killing me at home.”

“I feel like single parenting is impossible. I either fail at work and get fired or neglect my kiddos. I feel like I cannot do anything well.”

“What did I do wrong this time? I would never have dreamed of talking to my parents the way he talks to me!”

“Are they going to survive? Why do they resist my help?”

You have so many questions. There’s one thing you know for sure, though…

Parenting is the only job you can’t quit.

The family system is a group of independent minds with unique ideas and individual needs sharing a physical and emotional space. For the system to function well, its members need to communicate, collaborate and have compassion toward one another.

Parents have an enormous responsibility to nurture the physical and mental health of everyone involved.

Every family faces difficult crosswinds that they navigate well. But then there are unpredicted tornados: illness, substance use, adoption issues, death, job loss, divorce, abuse, and/or neglect.

These things can destroy a family if you do not seek help.

It’s true. It does take a village to raise some children.

I am the mother of three drastically different children. The youngest two are adopted, and one has profoundly heartbreaking special needs.

My relationship and marriage fell apart after 16 years. I was overwhelmed. I was on autopilot. I felt little joy.

Even though I had the education and training to address these problems, I knew I couldn’t do it alone.

I knew my family would not heal and thrive unless I asked for help.

1094250908Parenting doesn’t have to be this hard.

Allow me to help you and your family strengthen your bond… before the storm separates you.

I will help your family identify the parts in the system that are breaking or are already broken. Together, we will determine if it is possible and beneficial to mend the bond or let go. We will meet alone and together as a family.

I recognize the importance of involving schools if a child needs an Individual Education Plan (IEP), physicians if an eating disorder is present, psychiatrists if medication is required, and lawyers or guardians ad litem if a divorce is pending.

We will prioritize self-care, address what you can’t control, learn the meaning of your child’s behavior, and, most importantly, learn not to take everything personally.

“Fall down seven times, get up eight.”

–Japanese proverb
